Sinatra and the British Invasion

New Standards | Sep 21, 2015

On February 9, 1964, 34% of the American population watched the Beatles first US television appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show, and popular music changed forever. Sinatra eventually would join Elvis, Ray Charles, James Brown, Tony Bennett and others who covered Beatles songs. He sang and recorded the George Harrison song “Something” - the second-most covered Beatles song after "Yesterday". The Beatles would win their share of Grammy awards, however they lost Album of The Year to Frank Sinatra on two different occasions. Author Tom Santopietro explains Sinatra’s mixed feelings about the Beatles and the “new” kind of popular music they helped establish in America.
