Listen: So Percussion, Miya Masaoka and the Brothers Balliett Open the 2015 Look & Listen Festival

New Sounds Live | Jun 24, 2015

On May 1, the 14th annual Look & Listen Festival opened at the BRIC House performing arts venue in Brooklyn. The evening was hosted by vocalist Helga Davis and also featured interviews with the performer and visual artist Jennifer Maravillas.

The Brooklyn-based percussion ensemble So Percussion kicked off the opening night with a performance of their newly-released Music for Wood and Strings by composer-guitarist Bryce Dessner.

Two world premieres followed: musician and performance artist Miya Masaoka performed her piece for koto, voice, temple blocks, and electronics draped as a "suit" over her body, and Doug and Brad Balliett – identical twin composers, performers, and Q2 Music hosts from Massachusetts – closing the concert with their new ensemble piece Jezebel the Proud for soprano, two English horns, bassoon, cello, and guitar.

Program

Bryce Dessner - Music for Wood and Strings

Miya Masaoka - Prelude, Bones

Doug Balliett and Brad Balliett - Jezebel the Proud
