'Something Is Emerging From This Community'

On the Media | Jun 2, 2017

After Jeremy Christian murdered two people who intervened as he shouted anti-Muslim slurs at women on a Portland train, the mainstream media quickly declared the incident a product of Donald Trump's divided, embittered America. Right-wing media, however, sought to undermine that narrative by highlighting parts of Christian's backstory: he supposedly supported Bernie Sanders, not Trump, and hated everyone, not just Muslims. Meanwhile, as Portland's mayor tried, unsuccessfully, to revoke a permit for an alt-right march happening this weekend, a debate over free speech flared.
