Many of George Saunders’ short stories deal with characters who are economically on the margins, and feeling anxious about their prospects. They are people who, if they were not fictional, might well be fans of Donald Trump. Saunders recently spent time reporting from the Trump campaign trail, going to rallies across the country, and he spoke with the The New Yorker's Deborah Treisman about what he learned.
