The world of opera is full of bad behavior. Let’s face it, no one wants to see an opera where everyone is nice and no one has any trouble. But even by operatic standards, the behavior of the main character in The Rake’s Progress is pretty inexcusable. Of course there’s a devil in disguise leading him down that path, and there is a glimmer of hope that he may yet escape with his soul. Inspired by a series of paintings by William Hogarth, this opera features some of Igor Stravinsky’s most accessible music and a libretto by the great poet W. H. Auden, and it’s beginning a rare run of performances at the Met. Stravinsky's The Rake’s Progress opens May 30 at the Met, with three more performances ending on June 11.
