The Kenyan composer and sound artist Nyokabi Kariũki divides her time between that East African country and the United States. Her music draws on experimental electronics, contemporary classical music, pop, and sound art without every quite settling into any one of them, and she uses an often bewitching mix of vocals, instrumental sounds, field recordings, and electronic processing to create songs that somehow manage to blend abstract sound with actual storytelling. Her new LP, Feeling Body, was written after her experience with long COVID. Nyokabi Kariũki joins members of the String Orchestra of Brooklyn on March 22 at Roulette to play new arrangements of some of her songs. The Soundcheck Podcast session with Nyokabi Kariũki drops on March 23.
