Study: New York's a Good Town for Female Entrepreneurs

WNYC News | Mar 1, 2016

A new study suggests women are rapidly making inroads in the business world in New York.

Over the past five years, the number of women-owned businesses in the city increased 36 percent. In the same time period, the number of men-owned businesses grew by just 8 percent, according to an analysis of US census data by the Center for an Urban Future.

The study also found 40 percent of private businesses is New York City are women-owned, compared with 33 percent in 2011.

“We've seen an incredible surge in women entrepreneurs in recent years in New York City,” said Jonathan Bowles of the Center for an Urban Future. “The number of women-owned businesses has been on the rise in nearly every industry from healthcare to tech to construction,” Bowles said.

The study also found women entrepreneurs are attracting more venture capital in New York than they are in Boston or the Bay Area, although they still lag men by wide margins.
