Sun Ra – "Reel 191 Blues" (Weekly Music Roundup)
If you’ve never heard of the cosmic jazz keyboardist and composer Sun Ra, look him up. His story, of bringing music from Saturn to all of us on Earth, is fascinating. Actually, on second thought, don’t look him up. The spoilsports at Wikipedia will tell you he was born Herman Blunt in Alabama, and where’s the fun in that? Sun Ra died in 1993, but a bunch of newly discovered recordings with his band, The Arkestra, have just come out on an album called Kingdom of Discipline. They show his range, from far out keyboard excursions to off-kilter ballads to traditional blues. Sun Ra and His Arkestra's tune "Reel 191 Blues" is part of our Weekly Music Roundup.
