The South African singer Thandiswa (full name Thandiswa Mazwai) has released a new album called Sankofa which blends the distinctive sounds of South African jazz with that country’s contemporary electronic pop. This track, “Emini” is one of her occasional political songs, in which she sings of the hope that accompanied the rise to power of a Black government in South Africa, and the disappointments that followed. With national elections happening on May 29th, it’s a timely song, and its message is delivered atop a rhythm that sounds like a heart racing. “Emini” by the South African singer Thandiswa is part of our Weekly Music Roundup.
