How Big Data Controls Us

The Leonard Lopate Show | Aug 30, 2017

Cathy O’Neil, a data scientist and the author of the blog Mathbabe.org, joins us to discuss her new book, Weapons of Math Destruction: How Big Data Increases Inequality and Threatens Democracy. She reveals the data models that control our society and individual lives. These models include how we score teachers and students, sort résumés, grant loans, and monitor our health. She calls for us to be more aware of how these models can be opaque, unregulated or even wrong.

Cathy O’Neil will appear on Sept. 20 for Grand Central Tech's monthly author series (335 Madison Ave., between 43rd and 44th). Ticket price includes a seat in the audience, the ability to participate in the conversation, and a copy of the book, purchased locally from 192 Books in Chelsea.
