U Thant Statement on the Escalation of the Vietnam War

The NYPR Archive Collections | Jan 1, 2000

In this statement, United Nations Secretary General U Thant discusses the escalation of the Vietnam War as well as other conflicts in Cambodia and Laos. He argues that military actions cannot bring peaceful solutions and urges the nations involved to adhere to the agreements made during the Geneva convention (1955). He laments the fact that the United Nations has not been in a position to facilitate a peaceful resolution and calls for an international meeting between these countries to work towards that resolution.
