The Lives That Make Up Rikers Island

The Leonard Lopate Show | Jul 6, 2015

Dana Goldstein, Alysia Santo, and Christie Thompson discuss their June 29 New York Magazine cover story, “Rikers Island, Population 9,790.” Produced in collaboration with The Marshall Project, it takes an in-depth look at life at Rikers Island through the eyes of the people who live and work there, including corrections officers, New York City Corrections Commissioner Joe Ponte, and teenage inmates who spent time in solitary confinement.

Related Story: Jennifer Gonnerman discussed the case of Kalief Browder, who was held at Riker's Island for three years without a trial, more than a year and a half of that time in solitary confinement. On June 6, 2015, Browder committed suicide.
