Since the U.S. Invasion of Afghanistan, Conditions for Women have Barely Improved

The Leonard Lopate Show | Dec 19, 2014

Jen Percy discusses her story in the January issue of Harper’s Magazine, “Love Crimes: What liberation looks like for Afghan women.” Percy traveled to Afghanistan, discovering that conditions for women have hardly improved since the U.S. invasion. Women often marry their rapists in order to avoid jail time for committing a “moral crime,” domestic violence shelters are overcrowded, and even the female employees of the Ministry of Women’s Affairs are covered in bruises inflicted by abusive husbands.
