In Puerto Rico, the styles of bomba and plena are associated with the communities descended from enslaved Africans. They’re originally built around the most basic instruments – voices and drums; but over the years, the instrumentation has expanded to include strings and horns. One of Puerto Rico’s best plena groups, Plena Libre, is in New York on Saturday, Dec. 4 to perform with noted folk singer Victoria Sanabria. Expect some nods to the season along the way when Victoria Sanabria and Plena Libre play on Sat., Dec. 4, at the Lehman Center in the Bronx.
