Flutist Nicole Mitchell is part of the Chicago jazz scene, where she leads her own Black Earth Ensemble as well as playing in numerous other settings. On June 23 though, she’s in New York to take part in the annual Vision Festival, which since 1996 has presented perhaps the city’s most wide-ranging overview of free jazz and other forms of improvised music. Mitchell has put together a new electro-acoustic ensemble that includes piano, bass, drums, and electronics, to play her Dreams of Awakening. Nicole Mitchell leads Joshua White, piano; Ken Filiano, bass; Terri Lyne Carrington, drums; and Val Jeanty, electronics, percussion in the late set, at 10:30PM, of the Vision Festival at Roulette.
