The Jazz At Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis is about to pay tribute to some earlier musicians who did their part to get music out into the community. The Voices of Freedom concert includes arrangements of songs written or made famous by Betty Carter, Billie Holiday, Abbey Lincoln, and Nina Simone. Under the music direction of JLCO trombonist and vocalist Chris Crenshaw, rising star vocalists adept in jazz, blues, folk, and beyond—including Melanie Charles, Shenel Johns, and Ashley Pezzotti performing essential works by the most powerful female performers and songwriters of the 20th century - like “Tight,” “Strange Fruit,” and “Freedom Day.” Jazz At Lincoln Center Orchestra performs a Voices of Freedom concert online on Friday, March 26, at 7:30PM EDT, and remains available on-demand until March 31.
