Waitress Is Serving Something New On Broadway

New Standards | Mar 25, 2016

Sara Bareilles and Broadway? Not necessarily a pairing on would initially make. Yet, we’re incredibly excited for “Waitress” to open this April. The new musical, based on the 2007 film, features music and lyrics written by Sara Barellies and a book by Jessie Nelson. It’s directed by Diane Paulus, who recently won a Tony for her direction of the revival of “Pippin.”

Tony-winner Jessie Mueller, of Beautiful fame, led the cast in its out-of-town try out last fall, and thoroughly wowed audiences. There has even been some speculation that the musical could give Hamilton a run for its money!

The musical follows Jenna, a pregnant waitress who’s trapped in an unhappy and abusive marriage. Just as she thinks all hope for happiness is lost, by finding romance in an unlikely newcomer visiting her diner in the Deep South. The story, ultimately, isn’t about their blooming romance or even Jenna’s cute pies, but about her taking charge of her life and finding her own happiness.

“Waitress” begins previews March 25th at the Brooks-Atkinson Theater and opens April 24th.
