This Week in Politics: A challenge to Senator Menendez starts to take shape

WNYC News | Sep 30, 2023

U.S. Senator Bob Menendez officially pleaded not guilty in federal court this week. Federal prosecutors allege the New Jersey senator accepted hundreds of thousands of dollars from associates. They say in exchange, he leaked sensitive information to Egypt and interfered with criminal investigations in New Jersey. Menendez says he is innocent and won't resign, despite calls for him to do so by many leading Democrats.

All of this sets up a potential scramble for his senate seat, and the prospect of fellow Democrats running against an indicted sitting senator who also happens to have huge name recognition in the state.

WNYC's Nancy Solomon joins Weekend Edition host David Furst with the latest.
