This Week in Politics: State judge finalizes new district maps in NY
A court-appointed mapmaker finalized New York's congressional districts and state Senate districts early Saturday morning, putting them in place for the next decade - barring any further lawsuits. Carnegie Mellon University fellow Jonathan Cervas, who was tasked with redrawing new district lines after a set of Democrat-drawn maps were overturned, released his final maps after midnight.
Some notable changes include the 11th Congressional District picking up Bensonhurst, making it more of a Republican stronghold. Bedford-Stuyvesant will once again be covered under one district, a reversal from what we saw earlier this week when the neighborhood was going to be split into two districts, angering lawmakers.
But even with the maps finalized, chaos still reigns this election year - a year when many say the balance of power could shift in Congress. Currently, Democrats hold a slim majority and many had been looking to New York State as a place where the party could count on some safe seats. The new maps introduce another element of uncertainty.
