Facing Death, a Young Neurosurgeon Celebrated Life

The Leonard Lopate Show | Jan 8, 2016

Dr. Paul Kalanithi was 36-years-old and had nearly completed his training as a neurosurgeon when he was diagnosed with Stage IV lung cancer. He died in March 2015, almost two years after his diagnosis.  In his memoir When Breath Becomes Air, Kalanithi reflected on his career as a neurosurgeon at Stanford University and the joy of being a new father as he transitioned from the role of doctor to patient. His widow, Lucy Kalanithi, joins us to talk about his life and his work.

Event: Lucy Kalanithi will be in conversation with her twin sister, Joanna Goddard, for a tribute to Dr. Paul Kalanithi at Book Court (163 Court Street, between Pacific and Dean, Brooklyn) on January 11 at 7:00 p.m.
