When New York City Almost Went Broke

The Leonard Lopate Show | May 4, 2017

Kim Phillips-Fein, an historian of 20th century American politics who teaches at NYU Gallatin, joins us to discuss her new book, Fear City: New York's Fiscal Crisis and the Rise of Austerity Politics. Phillips-Fein looks at the lasting impacts of New York City's 1975 financial crisis. She argues that the way in which the city was saved from bankruptcy created a new kind of thinking about government in America.

Kim Phillips-Fein will appear at the Gotham Center for NY City History (CUNY's Graduate Center 365 Fifth Ave., between 34th and 35th St.) on May 8th at 6:30-8 p.m.
