Why New York City's Census Director Says Ending Door Knocking Early Will Be "Disastrous"

The Trump Administration has decided to shorten the deadline for the Census count by one month. That means door-knocking efforts are now slated to stop by September 30th.

Julie Menin is New York City's Census 2020 director. She says the change will result in a massive undercount, especially because those who have not filled out the survey yet are mostly immigrants and communities of color.

"We need that door knocking, we need that in-person contact that we've not been able to have in large part because of COVID," she told WNYC's Jami Floyd. "For the Trump Administration to say they're going to cut short the door knocking by one month is really going to hurt NYC and our efforts to achieve a fair and accurate count."
