Why Sexual Abuse in Prison and ICE Detention Centers Goes Unchecked

Journalist Josephine Yurcaba discusses her story for Rewire, “For Survivors of Prison Rape, Saying ‘Me Too’ Isn’t an Option.” She investigated accounts of sexual abuse in prisons across the country and found that every year, an estimated 200,000 people held in United States prisons and jails face sexual abuse. She looks at why the public thinks criminals deserve the sexual abuse they suffer while incarcerated, and why there’s a persistent belief that they do not have rights. Gaby Del Valle, staff writer for The Outline, also talks about her recent investigation, “Asylum seekers are being sexually assaulted in U.S. detention,” which looks at sexual abuse in ICE detention centers.
