Why Women "Volunteer" at Work

Lise Vesterlund, Andrew W. Mellon Professor of Economics at the University of Pittsburgh discusses her recent article in the Harvard Business Review, “Why Women Volunteer for Tasks That Don’t Lead to Promotions.” Her research found that in the workplace, women are more likely to take on challenging work and additional time-consuming tasks that are unlikely to drive revenue, and probably won’t be recognized or included in performance evaluations. She details why this is the case, and what can be done to make it better. We’ll also take calls from listeners about their experiences with “volunteering” for projects at work.
