As a gay Black composer working on the downtown music scene in the '70s and '80s, Julius Eastman wrote numerous works that dealt with identity, works that had an outsider cast to them even as they drew on the Minimalism and jazz that were becoming common at the time. By the time Eastman died in 1990, he had all but disappeared from that scene, but recent years have seen a surge of interest in his wildly colorful scores. The L.A. band Wild Up is in the middle of a 7-volume set of recordings of Eastman’s music, and on Friday, April 21, they kick off a mini-series of three shows of works by Eastman at 92NY by playing this piece, called Femenine [sic]. Devonté Hynes and Adam Tendler will join them during these three concerts at 92Y, (fka The 92nd Street Y) on April 21 and April 22.
