Xylouris White is of the more unexpected musical duos currently touring. The band is comprised of Giorgios Xylouris, or simply George Xylouris, who comes from the island of Crete and plays the Cretan instrument known as laouto, and Jim White, drummer from Australia best known for his work with the Dirty Three, PJ Harvey, and many others. The duo’s music draws equally from the ancient Cretan folk tradition and from Western rock. The most unexpected thing about it is how well the two styles play together. Xylouris White plays April 6 at Le Poisson Rouge with Quebecois musician and songwriter Myriam Gendron.Â
