Pearla is the stage name of Nicole Rodriguez, a Brooklyn singer and songwriter who makes a kind of surreal folk-pop. Her album is called Oh Glistening Onion, The Nighttime Is Coming – and believe it or not, by the time you finish listening to it, that title makes some kind of sense. The songs are strange but lovely, the work of a songwriter looking at the world, in all its beauty and weirdness, and using music to try to make sense of it. Pearla plays on Friday night, April 24, at the Brooklyn club Purgatory.
