In Season: Happy red, white and blue-berry weekend

WNYC News | 3 hours ago

Local farmstands are teeming with fresh and colorful berries right now. Strawberries, cherries, currants and raspberries had already hit the markets. Blueberries and blackberries will peak soon.

Amelia Tarpey, Program and Publicity Manager for GrowNYC Greenmarkets, said the variety and colors of the berries will make perfect desserts for this holiday weekend. You can use a cookie or tart shell, cream cheese frosting and a mix of fresh berries to pile on top, or to lay down in the colors and style of the American flag. It'll look like you spent a lot of time making it and you won't even need to turn on the over.

Berry season is short, so flash freeze a batch of fresh berries to enjoy in the fall and winter. You can do that by washing and drying off your berries before placing them in a single layer onto a baking sheet. Freeze them for a couple of hours and then transfer them into an air-tight freezer bag. This will ensure the berries don't clump up in the freezing process.

Right now, blueberries are selling for about $5 to $9 per pint.
