In Season: rhubarb

WNYC News | May 15

It's the season for rhubarb, which is sometimes called the celery of the dessert world. It's crisp, tart and photogenic, and can be found in colors ranging from crimson red to light green. You can make a show-stopping rhubarb pie by cutting the stalks at a diagonal and arranging them on top to make a vibrant and complex design.

Rhubarb work well with savory foods, too, and can be made into a vinaigrette or a sauce to spoon over baked chicken or to cut the richness of fried pork chops.

Amelia Tarpey is the Program and Publicity Manger for GrowNYC Greenmarkets. Right now at market, rhubarb is going for around $6 to $8 a bunch, or about $7 to $9 dollars per pound.
