Dr. Adam Hamawy becomes New Jersey's first Muslim member of Congress

Arab and Muslim candidates across the country came out strong in the midterms... but it wasn't an easy fight. Many of the races were marked by an increase in anti-Muslim rhetoric, some of which came from the president.

Still, in New York, Darializa Avila Chevalier, a Muslim Latina, won the 13th congressional district. Aber Kawas will be the first Palestinian-American to serve in the New York State Legislature. History was also made in the Garden State, as Dr. Adam Hamawy becomes New Jersey's first Muslim member of Congress.

Rep.-elect Hamawy is an Egyptian-American surgeon and entered politics after going on medical missions in Gaza in 2024 and 2025. He joins All Things Considered to talk about these victories.
