Emefe is a Brooklyn band that draws on the sounds of Nigerian Afrobeat and American funk. Since 2009 the group has played horn-forward dance music – or at least, they did untiol 2016, when they decided to call it a day. But one of their songs, called “Sun Spat,” had begun to pick up steam online, eventually racking up millions of plays, and basically forcing Emefe to re-form. Now they’re back with a new album, Forward, which includes songs like “The Dirt.” Emefe plays on July 17 at The Rockaway Hotel.
