The Palestinian musician Simon Shaheen is a master of both the oud, the Arab lute, and the violin. For much of the 80s and 90s he was a focal point in the Arab music scene here in New York, where he led a number of different ensembles, performed with jazz and classical musicians, wrote his own music, and recorded his own versions of classic Egyptian orchestral pop. But chances to see Simon in New York have been rare since he moved to California, so his May 21 show at Roulette is an exciting event.
