The band called Chicha Libre is based in Brooklyn, but their music is based on a sound that came out of Peru over half a century ago, when young Latin American musicians began mixing the sounds of British and American rock that they heard on the radio with the traditional rhythms they had grown up with. The resulting style, called “chicha,” was trippy and spacey, but also clearly rooted in the sounds and rhythms of Latin America. The members of Chicha Libre began writing music in that style twenty years ago, and have led an unexpected renaissance of the style. Chicha Libre plays May 30 at Baby’s All Right.
