The Bad Plus at Sony Hall

Since the turn of the century, the band called The Bad Plus has been exploding the idea of what a jazz piano trio could be. First, they wrote music where the so-called rhythm section instruments were as important as the piano, and works that used rock grooves. They even covered songs from Black Sabbath, Blondie, and more. Then they dropped the piano altogether, performing as a quartet with clarinet and electric guitar. The Bad Plus’s last record is called Complex Emotions, and it has turned out to be an appropriate title, as The Bad Plus have announced they’re saying farewell with one last tour. The band plays their final show in NY on June 19 at Sony Hall.
