Movies about unlikely romances aren’t new.

The famous actress falling in love with a regular guy. The chauffeur’s daughter carries a flame for a wealthy playboy only to fall for his much more serious older brother. Two teens — one popular, one not — fight through the disapproval of their friends and finally find themselves together on prom night. But a new romantic film takes a step in a different direction.

It is a fable-like story about a fisherwoman who is mocked and shunned by her village for being single. So, she asks the local basket maker to weave her a husband. And he does. Her new wicker companion turns out to be affectionate and attentive. Soon, their unconventional romance has the jealous villagers scheming.

The movie has taken off at the box office and online. The 1A Movie Club convenes to talk about “Wicker.”
