Two All-New Shows on Science and Creativity

Studio 360 | Jan 11, 2011

Can art make you healthier? Who's watching you? This December Studio 360 will explore the culture of medicine and surveillance in two hour-long shows.

Art as Medicine

Aired December 10

Does music reduce pain? Should your oncologist try writing a little fiction? The arts are changing the health care industry and play increasing roles in what we experience when we go to the hospital. We’ll meet the director of a burn unit in Ohio who’s gathering data on the anesthetic qualities of music; and an obstetrician who believes that reading literature helps doctors treat patients. And we’ll reveal which doctor TV show is the most accurate. (Differential diagnosis: it’s not “House.”)
The Technology of Surveillance

Aired December 17

Who’s watching you? Virtual reality pioneer — and musician — Jaron Lanier tells Kurt that companies like Google and Facebook are building “castles of secrecy” with information that we freely share about ourselves. We’ll also meet a geographer chasing spy satellites in the name of art and a biometrics professor studying facial recognition technology.
Studio 360's Science & Creativity series is produced by PRI and WNYC, and supported in part by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.
