Shark Sighting at Hamptons Beach Forces Officials to Ban Swimming

WNYC News | Jun 1, 2011

Shark sightings off a Hamptons beach forced authorities to ban swimming until further notice, officials said.

About four or five 10-foot sharks were first spotted at Cupsogue Beach County Park near West Hampton Dunes on Tuesday afternoon and were again seen on Wednesday, deputy Suffolk County Parks Commissioner Tracey Bellone said.

Visitors were allowed in the park but not in the water.

The species of shark was not immediately known.
