WNYC News | Jun 19, 2011

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg's mother has died. Charlotte Rubens Bloomberg died Sunday at the age of 102.

The mayor says she died at home in Medford, Massachusetts -- in the same house where she raised Mayor Bloomberg and his sister, Marjorie.

Charlotte Bloomberg was a major presence in her son's life. He gave away millions of dollars in her name and called her every day. She stood with her son on the steps of City Hall when he took his oaths of office in 2002 and 2006.

In a statement, the Mayor and his sister described their mother as having "unimpeachable integrity, fierce independence and constant love."
