#3063: Near Eastern Music

This New Sounds program presents music from the Near East, including works from Lebanon, Syria, Iran, and Israel. Bassist Jim Guttmann, (anchor man in the Klezmer Conservatory Band,) leads his own ensemble which branches out intriguingly into jazz, funk, and world music. From Guttmann’s brand new recording “Bessarabian Breakdown,” we’ll hear a traditional Sephardic melody “Cuando el Rey Nimrod.”

Also, from another bass player, Avishai Cohen, there’s folk music filtered through a jazz lens, as Cohen sings tunes learned from his mother while growing up in Israel. Plus, something from Lebanon by Savina Yannatou, a traditional song from the Syrian singer Gaida, music from Turkey, and more.
