Latin American "telenovelas," or soap operas, have gone global in recent years. They are found on TV sets in Poland and Indonesia and one Mexican soap has become the top-rated show in Russia. These melodramatic storylines have struck a universal chord among viewers and become part of what a writer for Foreign Affairs magazine calls the global cultural establishment.
