Tisch Says She Will Not Run for Mayor

SchoolBook | Nov 9, 2011

Merryl H. Tisch, chancellor of the New York State Board of Regents, says she is not interested in running for mayor, despite the buzz that has circulated in recent weeks about her as a potential candidate.

In an interview on Wednesday, Dr. Tisch categorically denied rumors, blog posts and even an item in a Page Six column in The New York Post on Wednesday, suggesting her name as a potential contender to replace Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg in 2013.

“It’s a distraction,” she said. “I am the chancellor, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.”

Dr. Tisch’s name has been floated for weeks by some business leaders who, in private, say they are looking for an alternative to the well-known roster of candidates who have begun to jockey for position, among them the City Council speaker, Christine C. Quinn, and the public advocate, Bill de Blasio. Like Mr. Bloomberg, Dr. Tisch has money, connections and a deep interest in education, though she and the mayor seem to be increasingly at odds over what is needed to improve the city’s school system.
