Small Tornado Hits New Jersey

New Jersey News | Jul 2, 2013

The National Weather Service confirmed an EF-0 tornado touched down in New Jersey on Monday morning, at 9:17 am.

The tornado touched down in Berkeley Heights, before cutting a path through New Providence and Summit.

Lisa Weiss says the mid-morning storm caused a tree to plunge through the roof of her home in Summit. And she says other homes in her neighborhood were also hit.

"There's a lot of damage down my street but then half a mile up there's no damage. So it's that kind of thing with a tornado that it just seems to take down wherever it comes down."

The storm toppled trees and caused some power outages, with the worst damage occurring near a sewage treatment plant in Berkeley Heights. It packed winds up to 85 mph

Meanwhile, a flash flood threat continues for most of New Jersey because forecasters say the potential exits for another round of heavy rain and thunderstorms.

Forecasters are predicting an additional half inch to 1 inch of rain over parts of the state today. The ground is already saturated from yesterday's storms.
