Judy & Joby

Soundcheck | May 3, 2010
If she weren't so busy being an energetic, fireballing pianist, Judy Carmichael could star in a sitcom about her life so far. Once mistaken for a spy outside of Casablanca, this former beauty pageant participant began her career playing stride and ragtime music at 10 years old, after winning a bet with her grandfather. Years later, while working in Disneyland as a theme park pianist, she once naively told Count Basie that she hated jazz, after he suggested she go to New York to explore the jazz scene. And from the London classical and rock scene, we're visited by Joby Talbot. At just over 30, Talbot has already had great success creating music for TV and film, as well as performing with the contemporary classical music band Billiardman and pop group The Divine Comedy. No wonder he was once voted BBC's Young Musician of the Year.
