Mining musical treasures

Soundcheck | May 3, 2010
What happens when you put a coal miner out of work? He makes music about it – and loud. The Grimethorpe Brass Band was the subject of the hit film, "Brassed Off" and their conductor, Garry Cutt, will be in to talk about the band’s upcoming Carnegie Hall debut. Finnish mezzo-soprano Monica Groop is traveling the world with a diverse program of vocal works. She performs arias of Bizet and Grieg live in the studio. And Pulitzer-prize winning music journalist Justin Davidson visits to talk about the brouhaha surrounding composer John Adams’ reception of his Pulitzer Prize this year.
