Godfrey Reggio’s "Qatsi" film trilogy explores the destructive impact of the modern world on the environment through a "kaleidoscope of wordless images." Wordless, yes, but definitely not soundless. Philip Glass crafted a mesmerizing musical score of string and synthesizer for each film. Today on Soundcheck, we speak with Glass about the relationship between the music and Reggio’s visuals. Next, we meet with film composer Elmer Bernstein to discuss his partnership with innovative short filmmakers Charles and Ray Eames. Berstein has written over 200 major film and television scores, and has won enough Emmy, Academy, Grammy, Tony and Golden Globe awards and nominations to break the sturdiest of trophy cases. Finally, we discuss the powerful documentary Amandla with one of its stars, jazz legend Hugh Masakela. Amandla chronicles the role song played in bringing down the walls of South Africa's Jericho.
