It's Not Just Those Boring Scales

The lack of music education has been a central debate in the artistic and educational circles. Today on Soundcheck, guest host Julie Burstein will take a look at three different institutions that are making great strides in tackling this problem. First, Phil Schaap, jazz historian and disc jockey, will talk about his Jazz 101 courses for adults at Jazz at Lincoln Center. We also welcome Xanthe Jory, the executive director, and Eric Plaks, the arts coordinator from the new Bronx Charter School for the Arts, which is opening its doors this fall and is founded on the principle that arts education is instrumental in young development. And finally, music teachers Mark Lakirovich and Marlene Lippman from the Lucy Moses School will help guide parents on how best to get your children involved in music.
