Dance Fever (Ballet Style)

While often shunned in traditional concert halls, a growing number of contemporary composers are embraced by ballet and dance companies. Today on Soundcheck, two of them – John Corigliano and Augusta Read Thomas – join host John Schaefer to discuss the challenges and rewards of having their music used in dance performance. Both recently participated in a symposium hosted by the New York City Ballet about collaborating with choreographers and composing specifically for dance. Also on the show is Steven Mackey, the Princeton-based composer whose classical works make stunning use of the electric guitar. He joins us to shed light on his latest collaboration with the Brentano String Quartet. And Opera News editor Brian Kellow stops by to review new recordings by Cecilia Bartoli and Ewa Podles.
