The Discovery Card

Soundcheck | May 3, 2010
Lars Vogt may not be a household name among classical music fans in New York, but that may soon change. This week the German pianist will give a solo recital at Carnegie's Zankel Hall. He returns in February to perform Brahms with the New York Philharmonic, and in April, for two recitals with violinist and countryman Christian Tetzlaff. Oh, and did we mention that he's the new pianist-in-residence at the Berlin Philharmonic? Today, he joins us on Soundcheck to discuss – and offer a taste of – his impressively wide-ranging repertoire. We are also joined by the new-music singer Joan La Barbara and pianist Margaret Leng Tan, who are headlining Carnegie Hall's "When Morty Met John . . ." festival. Both musicians have enjoyed storied careers collaborating with the avant-garde pioneers Morton Feldman and John Cage and they share some of those experiences with us today.
