Alice’s Restaurant

Soundcheck | May 3, 2010
What would Thanksgiving be without a dose of “Alice’s Restaurant?” Arlo Guthrie’s signature tune (officially called the "Alice's Restaurant Massacree") was recorded in front of a live audience details a Massachusetts saga of garbage dumps closed on Thanksgiving, good ol' Officer Obie, as well as Guthrie's experiences with the draft. At 18 minutes in length, the song remains one of the most hilarious things ever recorded, and many of its politcal humor still holds true. Guthrie calls in to talk about the humorous genesis of the song. Continuing in the storytelling vein, we’re joined by roots-rocker Gillian Welch, whose music captures the ethos of mountain music and rural Americana.
