Celebrating 350 Years, with Music

“Jewish music has evolved far beyond traditional wedding music,” says Michael Dorf, executive producer of the New York Jewish Music & Heritage Festival, which takes place in 15 venues around the city next week. Dorf stops by to shed some light on the diversity of Jewish music in the United States – just as the American Jewish community is marking the 350th anniversary of Jewish refugees from Brazil settling in New York. The festival’s kickoff event takes place at the 92nd St. Y and stars Neil Sedaka and Philip Glass, among others. The festival will include a free concert and re-enactment of the arrival of the original 23 Jewish settlers at the South Street Seaport on Sunday, Sept. 12.
